About

Three generations of Morrisons

Dave Morrison founded D.J. Morrison Ltd in 1980. The family had been working wood well before that. Daniel, who runs the workshop today, is the third generation to do it.

Between them they have worked on desks, chairs, staircases, bookcases, kitchen benches, bureaus, church pews, memorial plaques, dining tables, bedroom suites, rocking chairs and rocking horses. Name a category and it has probably been through Ferry Road.

The work splits roughly in half. Restoring pieces people cannot bring themselves to throw away, and making new ones people will not want to. Commissions are as rewarding as the restoration work and often harder, which suits us.

We love what we do. Every job is different. Whether we are designing one off pieces, restoring furniture or retro double glazing historic windows, we love making things with our hands.

What we work in

Native and recycled native timbers, imported timbers, and modern materials when a client asks for them. All styles are catered to, Georgian through Edwardian to mid century. The family taste for mid century runs deep enough that Dave's brother owns Mr Mod in the city.

The workshop

271 Ferry Road in Waltham has been our home for years. It is a working joinery shop with a showroom at the front, not a retail store with a workshop somewhere out the back. The band saw, the clamps, the spray booth and the timber racks are all in the same building as the finished pieces.

You are welcome to come in. Most people who visit end up staying longer than they meant to.

Liberon

We are the New Zealand agents for Liberon, the French wood care range established in the 1800s and used by specialist restorers worldwide. It means the waxes, oils and dyes we finish your furniture with are the same products we supply to the trade. You can read more about Liberon or shop the range.
